- Summary
Naropa was born in a wealthy family and was intelligent since childhood. He became haughty because of his study in Veda and Buddhism and his fame for preaching. One day, he realized in his dream or a vision that he was still at a very low level, having only superficial knowledge but not any inner experiences. So he prayed to Buddha to reveal to him where to attain the Truth. Because of his sincerity Buddha showed him the upcoming Master’s appearance, name and location. So he went on his journey to seek the Master. Naropa had learned with many so-called Masters and was chosen as the head monk of Nalanda, the highest institution of Buddhism. However, he became proud for his cleverness and erudition, which brought him various trials and tests on his journey of truth seeking.
Naropa was seeing visions while walking. One day he saw a leprosy woman without limbs lying on the roadside. He said to her, “Go away, do not get in the way”. “I could not move. You should go around me if you are not in a hurry or jump over me if you are”, replied the woman. He covered his nose and jumped over her even though he had compassion in his heart at that time. All of a sudden, the leprosy woman was flying in the air with light radiating all overher bosy, laughing a loud and saying, “Listen clearly Naropa, in the highest realm, everyone is the same, all are one. In the state of Supreme Enlightenment, there’s no habit, boundary, , or any thoughts from habits. If one is still attached to his habitual concepts, how can he find a master? Ha ha ha ha!”
