  • Summary

Why do we want to become Buddha? It's not because we want to deliver sentient beings or escape from this world of sufferings, but because we should become Buddha. It would be a pity if we forget our status after being born into this mundane world. Spiritual practice does not require us to shave our head. We can keep our religious belief if we have any; and we don’t have to change our job. The most important thing for spiritual practice is to find our Buddha nature, our real Self or the original power. It is from there that we continue our practice instead of practicing from the outside. It is not necessary to wear monk or nun robes in order to practice spiritually.

I respect lay practitioners a lot. If a lay practitioner is very filial to his parents, at peace with his siblings, always respects his/her husband/wife, takes care of their kids, fulfills his family and social responsibilities, does his job well, and still practices spiritually, he is then the most noble person in the world. He does not need to shave his head to become noble. He is noble when he tries his best in his own situation.

The lay practitioners are busy taking care of their family and relatives, but it does not mean that they have no time for spiritual practice. We can use less time to read newspapers or watch TV, talk a little bit faster on the phone and chat less, and then we will have plenty of time. We are born and raised up by our parents and have been taken care of by the society; if we don't do anything good ourselves, we should come back again after we leave this world because we owe something to it. We need to repay the graces by returning as somebody or as an animal. In order to avoid this situation, we need to save time for spiritual practice.
