Monk Chong Tsin was born in a rich family. Soon after he was born, he fell into a river and was swallowed by a fish. It looked like he had a tough life, but later he received a lot of wealth and became even richer. Sometimes we cannot see far ahead, and we think God is unfair. Please listen to Supreme Master Ching Hai telling the legendary story of Monk Chong Tsin’ spiritual practice and his merits of no-killing.
"Charity and keeping the precepts have many merits. But they are qualities within the three worlds, and you could only get merits within the three worlds." Why did Buddhas in the old time all emphasize on charity? Master had an original and brilliant answer. "It's not good for us spiritual practitioners to fall into those traps, for we'll not be able to see the illusionary nature of this world. "
Master told two other stories-- "A pious farmer" and "Story of a Jew". One pious farmer was once bewitched by the devil, and it seemed like he gained something h from it, but what painful price he had to pay? And how did the farmer return to normal life with the guidance of a monk , after he was awakened and no longer listened to the devil or be threatened or tempted by him? When the farmer trusted and worshiped God, God will bestow everything on him naturally.
Every time when a Jew received some gifts, he was very happy and grateful to God, and knelt down to thank God. The rich man who helped him was very angry and wanted him to know who gave him the gifts. In the end the rich man finally realized: We cannot understand God's work . When we give charity, it's not really us who's giving. If the person's no t supposed to receive them, we'll not be able to give no matter how good our intention s are.
